Here are some new photos of Namanh Hoang at the studio spray painting one of Society of the Spectacle's Fall 2009 designs titled American Identity. Here are some comments Namanh Hoang's comments on this particular piece. This may be one of Society of the Spectacle's most controversial pieces so far. Already it has brought about many different opinions from our guests while it's been posted in our office these past few weeks. Comments include that it's frightening, disturbing, inspiring, and profound. I guess I don't really expect the same reactions nor do I find any particular response right or wrong. The fact of the matter is that our nation's current state of fear conjures prejudices against Muslim culture and yet I still believe that this one's cutural practices and national allegiances are not mutually exclusive. The questions this image ought provoke are is she American? is she Muslim? and hopefully we would realize that maybe an American Identity does not exclude an individuals cultural practices. In fact the essence of American culture itself is its cultural patchwork. |
